Alder Wood

Alder is one of the most common of the Pacific Coast commercial woods. But unlike many of the other important timber trees of the Northwest, alder is a hardwood. And, it is the only broadleaf tree with cones. Western alder is a fine-grained hardwood similar to other hardwoods like cherry, birch and maple. Alder grows on the Pacific Coast of Canada and the United States, favoring a damp, moist environment.

Knotty Alder Versus Clear Alder

Knotty Alder is wonderful in character and is perfect for a more rustic look. Knotty Alder will have knots that vary in size and shape. Clear Alder still has some slight imperfections and by no means is 100% clear ( because trees have branches). Clear Alder is clean and smooth and represents more of a fine furniture appearance.
