Decorating Bookcases and Hutches

by admin on June 19, 2009

When it comes to decorating bookcases in your home let’s face it, most men are lost! We just can’t wait to load up those display shelves with sports memorabilia, golf trophies from your last charitable scramble tournament (where you probably took more mulligans then you purchased), and a bunch of other ugly things that don’t belong.

Our job at Stone Creek Furniture Factory is to make sure that all the bookcases in our ads are decorated to the hilt. So we turn to “Super Decorator” Michelle Zambie to help us out. Michele has got a keen eye for color and symmetry, which helps capture great photographs. So, I thought it would be helpful for Michelle to offer up some tips on decorating your bookcase or desk hutch to make your home look great!

Michele’s Bookcase Decorating 101

Remember the bookcase in the furniture showroom, how beautiful it looked and how you knew it would be perfect in your home. As soon as the delivery truck left your driveway you were left staring at empty shelves. Here’s how
to get started.

Select several decorative pieces with different textures, shapes and heights. Items could include a colorful ceramic vase, a crystal bowl with shells, a mantle clock from grandpa or a woven basket.

Place items on empty shelves creating visual balance. No one side or shelf should have too many items. Consider the color of the pieces. This is a great way to add color on the shelves that are displayed in your drapes, pillows and furniture.

Next fill in with books, favorite family photos and a few small items. A touch of greenery brings it to life. Add pizzazz by displaying books upright library style, in stacks with a small item on top or grouping the spines by color.

Stand back to review your work. Make adjustments for balance. Sit back and wait for the compliments.
